What is HKDSE

The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) is an academic qualification offered by Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). The HKDSE examination is the only public examination administered in Hong Kong for secondary school graduates replacing Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) and Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) in 2012.

 

HKDSE subjects are divided into three categories, including 24 senior secondary subjects (4 core subjects and 20 elective subjects), over 40 Applied learning subjects and 6 other language subjects.

How to prepare for HKDSE exams

Students may feel the stress for sitting in HKDSE exams, stress from their parents, pressure to perform better, uncertainty for future on whether the marks will be enough to get them university admissions. However, if students can start preparing for the exams early they can succeed in the HKDSE without the pressure. Here are some tips on preparing for HKDSE exams:

 

  1. Start preparing months before the exams, do not wait till last month to start revisions. Languages are the subjects that need lots of practise and skills, therefore, start preparing for these even from F4. You should plan your own revision timetable from the start of the year and follow it, this will will feel more confident in your examination.
  2. Plan what subjects you are interested in and choose them wisely. Drop the subjects you are not comfortable with if needed to focus on the ones you are good in.
  3. Forming study group is a good idea, you can share the ideas and learn from each other
  4. Master the question types, see the past papers to learn more about what type of questions are asked and how they are formed, try to understand them.
  5. Find an effective way to study, everyone has different method to study. Find out what method is more productive for you.
  6. Do not hesitate to get help from teachers or classmates.
  7. Find a private tutor, if you are having difficulties understanding the subject materials in class.
